About
Resident Evil: requiem is the ninth mainline entry in the Resident Evil series of survival horror games. It alternates between two playable characters with very different gameplay. There is newcomer Grace Ashcroft, FBI analyst and daughter of Resident Evil: Outbreak's Alyssa Ashcroft, who finds herself in the bombed-out remains of Raccoon City to solve a string of mysterious deaths. The other playable character is returning series veteran Leon S. Kennedy. Originally conceived as an open-world online multiplayer project, the game was restructured by 2021 into a traditional single-player experience. It marks Leon's first major appearance since Resident Evil 6.
The narrative takes place roughly 30 years after the destruction of Raccoon City in Resident Evil 3. Grace Ashcroft investigates a string of mysterious deaths tied to the condemned Wrenwood Hotel, where her mother died years earlier. Her search leads to abduction and imprisonment in the Rhodes Hill Chronic Care Center. Concurrently, Leon investigates killings of Raccoon City survivors, tracing clues that involve a former Umbrella scientist.
Gameplay alternates between Grace and Leon in a structure reminiscent of Resident Evil: Revelations and the sequel. Grace's segments emphasize pure survival horror: limited resources, stealth navigation, and evasion of a stalking creature comparable in design philosophy to Mr. X or Lady Dimitrescu from previous games. Players can crouch, hide under furniture, distract the monster with thrown bottles, or use a lighter to illuminate darkness at the risk of attracting attention. Leon’s sections shift toward action-oriented combat, evoking the style of Resident Evil 4, with access to firearms, melee attacks, a durability-based hatchet for parrying, and the ability to use enemy weapons. Players can switch freely between first-person and third-person perspectives at any time.
