Yes, you read that right. AFTER ONLY 3 WEEKS the servers were already shut down and the game stopped existing. Players who already bought it are now left without it.
The reason for this is that the game flopped really hard due to a low player count, bad first impressions, very strong competition, but on top of all that, the general opinion from gamers is that the game simply wasn’t good enough.
However, this is not an isolated case. Extraction shooter games like Escape from Tarkov and Marathon are extremely hard to succeed with. You need a strong player base, balance has to be PERFECT, cheating can kill the game (as it has started happening in Marathon). The moment matchmaking dies, IT’S OVER!
Shutting down a game in 3 weeks means they saw absolutely no chance of recovery, and because of that it became a financially bad decision to keep the servers running. The game was literally “dead on arrival”.
This is actually one of the worst possible scenarios in gaming, because it didn’t even get a chance. It didn’t even fail after a year or something like that, IT DIDN’T EVEN START PROPERLY AND IT WAS ALREADY SHUT DOWN!
In today’s gaming industry; you’re either a hit, or you’re dead. No middle ground, especially for online-only games.
When games like this try to catch a trend, they need enough quality and budget. If they don’t? Instant failure.
