Sony will end physical disks for PlayStation games in 2028.

The end of a major era has arrived... Sony will no longer release PlayStation games on physical discs starting in 2028. This is the end of it forever.

The company has officially confirmed that starting in January 2028, it will completely stop producing physical discs for all new PlayStation games... Meaning that all future game releases will be available exclusively in digital format.

This new decision does not affect games releasing before January 2028, nor does it affect games that have already been released physically. However, as we can already assume, all new PlayStation titles after that date will be sold exclusively in digital form through the PlayStation Store or as digital codes in physical retail stores.

Sony explains that the reason behind this decision is very simple: the majority of gamers today buy their games digitally. According to the company's data, around 80% of full-game sales during fiscal year 2025 came from digital purchases rather than physical ones.

Because of this, we can also logically assume that the PlayStation 6 won't even have a disc drive feature.

This decision has definitely sparked some very heated reactions within the community.

While some believe the move to digital distribution was inevitable, a large number of gamers have expressed serious concerns about losing ownership of their games, the disappearance of the used games market, and becoming more dependent on digital stores.
