The end of a major era has arrived... Sony will no longer release PlayStation games on physical discs starting in 2028. This is the end of it forever.

Sony recently made one of the biggest and most important decisions in the history of the PlayStation brand. The company has officially confirmed that starting in January 2028, it will completely stop producing physical discs for all new PlayStation games... Meaning that all future game releases will be available exclusively in digital format.

This new decision does not affect games releasing before January 2028, nor does it affect games that have already been released physically. However, as we can already assume, all new PlayStation titles after that date will be sold exclusively in digital form through the PlayStation Store or as digital codes in physical retail stores.

Sony explains that the reason behind this decision is very simple: the majority of gamers today buy their games digitally. According to the company's data, around 80% of full-game sales during fiscal year 2025 came from digital purchases rather than physical ones.

Because of this, we can also logically assume that the PlayStation 6 won't even have a disc drive feature.

This decision has definitely sparked some very heated reactions within the community.

While some believe the move to digital distribution was inevitable, a large number of gamers have expressed serious concerns about losing ownership of their games, the disappearance of the used games market, and becoming more dependent on digital stores. Many collectors are saddened and say this marks the end of a legendary era for PlayStation.

Sony has officially confirmed what many gamers were afraid of: starting in 2028, new PlayStation games will no longer be released on physical discs.

For some, this is a natural step toward a digital future where everything exists in the same digital world. For others, it represents the end of physical collections that have been a part of gaming culture for more than three decades.
