The Don't Kill the Disc movement has begun. More than 115,000 gamers are asking Sony to keep games on physical discs.

After Sony recently confirmed that it will completely stop releasing new PlayStation games on physical discs starting in January 2028, the gaming community responded with an incredibly strong reaction. Independent Canadian retailer PNP Games launched a petition called Don't Kill the Disc, which managed to collect more than 115,000 signatures in just a few days. It clearly shows how much gamers don't want the tradition of physical discs to come to an end and how much it means to them.

The goal of this petition is obviously to convince Sony to abandon its plan for complete digitalization and continue releasing physical copies of games. The organizers of the petition state that they are not against digital game distribution at all. All they want is for players to continue having the choice between digital and physical editions. In addition, they warn that removing physical discs could negatively affect game ownership, game preservation, the used games market, and thousands of jobs related to the production and sale of physical game copies.

As we have already seen, the gaming community has strongly supported this initiative, and many people have signed the petition. Many players point out that they want the freedom to choose when it comes to buying games, rather than seeing physical editions disappear completely. On social media and across the internet, it's common to see people saying that buying a physical disc means true ownership of a game because nobody can take it away from you, while digital versions are simply licenses that depend on the platform and its rules.

The Don't Kill the Disc petition shows that a large number of gamers are not yet ready to say goodbye to physical game copies.

However, despite more than 115,000 signatures, it is still unlikely that Sony will change its plan to release new PlayStation games exclusively in digital format starting in 2028. The debate over the future of physical game releases is becoming one of the biggest topics in the gaming industry.
