Project Gotham Racing 2 is a single-player and multiplayer racing game focused on style-based driving and progression through international street courses. Players compete to build a reputation as one of the world’s best drivers by racing through detailed recreations of real cities including Chicago, Edinburgh, Florence, Barcelona, Washington D.C., Hong Kong, and Moscow. Unlike traditional racing games that reward only speed and finishing position, progression is tied to a unique points system based on flair and precision behind the wheel.

The game’s central mechanic is the Kudos system, which awards points for stylish maneuvers such as controlled power slides, drafting behind rivals, two-wheel balancing, clean sections of track, and executing 360-degree spins. Accumulating Kudos unlocks new vehicles and events, and riskier maneuvers grant higher scores. This layer of performance-based driving creates a balance between winning races and impressing spectators with skillful technique.

A large roster of licensed vehicles is available, ranging from compact cars and sports models to high-performance supercars. Examples include the Ferrari Enzo, Porsche GT2, BMW Z4, Mini Cooper S, and Pontiac GTO, with additional cars unlocked as players progress. Vehicles differ in handling, speed, and responsiveness, requiring players to adapt their driving style depending on the track layout and event type.

The game features multiple modes, including structured single-player challenges, quick races, and multiplayer competitions. Events take place on courses set within each city, with track designs emphasizing sharp corners, long straights, and distinctive landmarks. Players can compete through local System Link connections or online via Xbox Live, racing directly against others or downloading ghost data from top performers worldwide to improve lap times.
