God of War: Sons of Sparta

God of War: Sons of Sparta is a 2D Metroidvania action-platformer. It is the tenth installment in the God of War franchise and serves as the earliest chronological entry in the series. Set during the Greek era, the game acts as a prequel to God of War: Ascension and the flashback sequences of God of War: Ghost of Sparta, marking the first full installment centered on Greek mythology since Ascension, following the Norse-focused God of War and God of War Ragnarök.

The story follows a young Kratos during his formative years in Sparta, training under the brutal Agoge system alongside his younger brother, Deimos. When a fellow trainee disappears during a field exercise, Deimos urges Kratos to defy orders and search for him beyond the safety of Spartan territory. Their journey leads them across the harsh wilderness surrounding Sparta, where they confront mythological creatures and uncover a hidden threat tied to both their homeland and the gods. The narrative emphasizes the brothers' bond while foreshadowing the tragedy and rage that will later define Kratos' character.

Gameplay adopts a side-scrolling 2D perspective with a hand-drawn style inspired by God of War: Betrayal, blending action combat with exploration-driven progression. Players control Kratos using a spear and shield as primary weapons, combining light and heavy attacks with defensive maneuvers and timed counters. As a Metroidvania, the game features interconnected environments that gradually open up as new traversal abilities and combat techniques are unlocked.

In addition to standard melee combat, Kratos can wield Gifts of Olympus, divine abilities that grant elemental attacks, mobility enhancements, and powerful special moves. These abilities consume a regenerating resource and are integrated into both combat encounters and environmental puzzles. Enemy types range from rival warriors to mythological beasts drawn from Greek legend, with boss battles serving as major narrative milestones.
