About

Galactic Civilizations III is a single-player and multiplayer turn-based strategy game set in space. The game takes place in a far future where multiple alien civilizations, including humanity, vie for dominance across the galaxy. The player assumes the role of a faction leader, guiding an interstellar empire through exploration, colonization, diplomacy, trade, and warfare. Objectives vary depending on chosen victory conditions: conquering rivals through military strength, forming alliances, spreading cultural influence, or achieving technological supremacy.

Gameplay unfolds on a hex-based galactic map where players expand their territory by colonizing planets. Each world provides different resources and terrain, influencing how it can be developed. Colonies can be specialized toward research, industry, wealth, or influence, with planetary management handled through building projects and allocating citizens. Strategic resources, such as rare minerals or antimatter, are required to construct advanced ships and facilities, making expansion and trade vital.

Combat is conducted through custom-built starships. Players design vessels by selecting hull sizes, weapons, defenses, and support modules. Fleets are assembled from these ships and moved across the map to engage enemies. Battles are resolved automatically once fleets meet, but outcomes depend heavily on ship composition and technological research. Maintaining a balanced navy requires planning for logistics, supply, and resource costs.

Research and technology drive progression. The tech tree is divided into branches for military, colonization, governance, and science, with each providing new buildings, weapons, or bonuses. As research progresses, civilizations unlock ideological choices that reflect their approach to expansion, such as benevolent cooperation, pragmatic compromise, or malevolent conquest. These paths grant unique abilities and influence diplomatic relations.

Diplomacy allows treaties, alliances, and trade agreements with rival species, while espionage introduces covert operations to gather intelligence or sabotage enemies. Culture spreads through influence, potentially flipping enemy worlds without combat. Random galactic events, anomalies, and quests provide additional opportunities or setbacks that affect long-term strategy.

Multiplayer supports competitive or cooperative play across large maps with multiple opponents. Games can be customized with different galaxy sizes, star densities, and faction rosters.
