About
Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII - Reunion is a single-player action role-playing game and a remastered edition of Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII, originally released for the PlayStation Portable (PSP). Set seven years before the events of Final Fantasy VII, the story follows Zack Fair, a young SOLDIER operative working for the Shinra Electric Power Company. As Zack rises through the ranks under the mentorship of Angeal Hewley and alongside his senior, Sephiroth, he becomes entangled in Shinra’s secret experiments and the war in Wutai. His journey explores the origins of the Buster Sword, the moral decay within Shinra, and the connections that ultimately shape the destinies of Cloud Strife, Tifa Lockhart, and Aerith Gainsborough.
Gameplay is structured around a mission-based format that blends real-time combat and role-playing progression. Players directly control Zack in battle, freely moving across 3D environments to attack, block, dodge, and use special abilities. The Digital Mind Wave (DMW) system introduces an element of randomness to combat, with a slot reel that periodically grants temporary status buffs, powerful Limit Break attacks, or summon abilities. Magic and abilities consume MP and AP, while Materia spheres equipped on Zack determine available spells, techniques, and stat bonuses.
Progression is driven by traditional leveling and Materia fusion. Completing missions rewards experience, equipment, and crafting materials that allow players to create enhanced Materia combinations. Zack’s stats increase through combat experience, but the DMW system also influences when level-ups occur, tying growth to both chance and performance. Equipment management allows players to fine-tune their build, with accessories and Materia combinations enabling elemental resistances, critical bonuses, or unique effects that alter battle strategies.
Outside of combat, players can engage with side missions, exploration segments, and interactions with NPCs throughout Shinra’s headquarters, Midgar’s slums, and other regions of the world. Optional content includes minigames, hidden Materia challenges, and collectible emails that expand character backstories and world lore.
Reunion updates the original release with full high-definition graphics, redesigned character models, re-recorded voice acting for all dialogue, and reorchestrated music. The combat system has been modernized with smoother animation, manual camera control, and faster input responsiveness, aligning it with the action systems used in Final Fantasy VII: Remake. Additional interface and quality-of-life improvements include autosaving, refined menus, and more consistent DMW integration.
