About

Cow Clicker is an idle game created by Ian Bogost to show how devoid many Facebook games were of meaningful gameplay. The screen displayed a cow, and a user could click on it. After six hours, they could then click on it again. The title was created and showcased at an NYU event and then launched on Facebook.

Though intended as satire, the game became quite popular, and Bogost began selling special edition cows, making a significant amount of real money in the process. Eventually he grew tired of it and introduced the "Cowpocalypse" wherein all the cows were "raptured." The cows disappeared, though players could still click on where they used to be.
