The studio best known for the legendary RPG Disco Elysium, ZA/UM Studio, is laying off up to 32 employees following the poor performance of its new game!
ZA/UM Studio, the creator of the legendary cult RPG Disco Elysium, recently announced that it has decided to lay off up to 32 employees across all departments of the company. According to the studio's official statement, the reason for the layoffs is the disappointing commercial performance of its latest game, Zero Paradse: For Dead Spies, which, as they said, failed to achieve the sales that they had originally expected.
ZA/UM Studio stated that Zero Paradse: For Dead Spies received extremely positive reviews, but that its commercial success simply wasn't enough to maintain the studio at its current size. Because of that, employees across all departments were notified about possible layoffs, while the company also encouraged other studios to consider hiring the affected developers. The studio also added that it will continue working with representatives of the ZA/UM Workers' Alliance throughout the restructuring process.
Player reactions have mostly been filled with sympathy for the affected employees, but also criticism toward ZA/UM Studio's management. Many believe that the weak sales of Zero Paradse: For Dead Spies are not only the result of the game's quality, but also of the years of controversy surrounding ZA/UM Studio following the departure of the original creators of legendary game; Disco Elysium.
