The Chinese Soulslike game Wuchang: Fallen Feathers, which is inspired by Chinese history and mythology, is no longer exactly Chinese. Because it has changed ownership.
The development of this game is led by the Chinese studio Leenzee, but the publishing rights have been acquired by the Italian company 505 Games.
This means the game is still being developed by Leenzee, but since an Italian company bought the game, it now shifts from a local focus to a more global one. So the development stays the same, but who pushes the game to the market changes.
505 Games now has control over things like publishing, marketing, and distribution. While Leenzee is still making the game and keeping the full creative vision. This is a common move when a game has the potential to break into the global market.
This game is in a Soulslike style, something similar to Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice and Dark Souls. The setting is in historical China combined with dark fantasy elements. The focus is on fast and challenging combat, boss fights, atmosphere, and story. One of the rare Soulslike games that isn’t from Japan or the West.
This is important because a Western publisher automatically means bigger marketing, more visibility on the market, and potentially a better launch overall! 505 Games already has a lot of experience with AA and AAA projects, as well as global distribution.
Even though many thought that changing ownership would change the identity, the game hasn’t lost what makes it a Chinese Soulslike. It just got a stronger publisher, and with that, a higher chance for global success!
This is a complete upgrade for the whole project—if the gameplay is done right, Wuchang: Fallen Feathers could be one of the better non-FromSoftware Soulslike games.
