Until Dawn remake studio Ballistic Moon officially shuts down
"Ballistic Moon, the studio behind the Until Dawn remake, has officially closed after layoffs and failed attempts to secure new projects."
Ballistic Moon, the development studio responsible for the remake of the horror game Until Dawn, has officially shut down. The UK-based studio has been dissolved following a series of layoffs and financial difficulties that began shortly after the release of its project.
The company was founded in 2020 by industry veterans Duncan Kershaw, Neil McEwan, and Chris Lamb, many of whom previously worked at Supermassive Games — the original developer of Until Dawn. Their main project became a modern remake of the 2015 PlayStation horror title, bringing the cinematic adventure to PlayStation 5 and PC in 2024.
However, trouble for the studio began even before the remake launched. In September 2024, Ballistic Moon announced significant layoffs as part of an effort to stabilize the company while finishing development of the game. Around 40 employees were reportedly affected during that first round of cuts, with further reductions taking place later in the year.
Despite releasing the remake, the studio struggled to secure new projects or long-term funding. Sources claimed that by late 2024 the company had lost most of its development, marketing, and support teams, leaving only a very small group of staff behind.
Recent legal filings in the United Kingdom confirm that the company has now been formally dissolved. Documents published in the official public register show that Ballistic Moon was removed from the Companies House register earlier this year, marking the final closure of the studio.
The Until Dawn remake itself received a mixed reception from critics and players. While the updated visuals and additional scenes were praised, the game also faced criticism over performance issues and questions about whether the remake justified its full price for owners of the original version.
With Ballistic Moon now gone, the future of any further projects connected to the remake remains uncertain. For now, the studio’s brief history ends with a single major release — a modern reimagining of one of PlayStation’s most recognizable narrative horror games.
