If you saw the news about Rocket League switching to a new engine and thought it was about the fifth one – I don't blame you, first of all, the sixth one wasn't even announced, and second, Rocket League has been running on Unreal Engine 3 until now. It is incredible just to think how a game that has been running on technology from the Xbox 360 generation until now will suddenly become one of the most beautiful and most demanding. Just for reference, Unreal Engine 4 was announced as many as 12 years ago, while 5 was announced more than 6 years ago.
The official announcement came through a teaser lasting just under a minute, in which shots of tuned cars appear and where a new era is clearly spoken of. Although we still have almost no information about what Unreal Engine 6 should bring with it or when it should become available, we can only say that usually a new Unreal Engine also hints at a new generation of consoles. The already mentioned UE3 was tied to the PS3 and X360 consoles, then the PS4 and XBO switched to Unreal 4, and then later UE5 arrived.
To this day, UE5 is considered the most used tool in game making, but we had to wait several years for the first games running on it, and upon release, they only received a lot of criticism on account of optimization and many other problems of a technical nature. What its successor will bring with it remains to be seen.
