"Ubisoft has cancelled the long‑anticipated Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake as part of a broad strategic reset that also removes multiple projects and delays others"

Ubisoft has officially cancelled Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake, bringing an end to a project that had spent years in development and was most recently expected to arrive sometime in 2026. The cancellation comes as part of a wider internal reset the publisher outlined this week.

First revealed in 2020, the remake became one of Ubisoft’s most troubled projects, facing repeated delays and multiple changes in leadership and development teams. Despite occasional assurances that work was continuing, the title has now been shelved as the company reshuffles priorities and reallocates resources across its portfolio.

As part of the reset, Ubisoft confirmed it has cancelled six projects currently in development, including several unannounced games and at least one mobile title. A further seven projects have been delayed, with the company citing the need for additional development time and improved quality standards.

The restructuring also includes studio closures and internal reorganization. Ubisoft confirmed that some locations will be shut down, while others will undergo changes as the company looks to reduce fixed costs amid rising development expenses and increasing competition across the industry.

Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot described the move as a necessary step to “reclaim creative leadership,” saying the company intends to focus more heavily on its strongest franchises, open-world experiences, and long-term live-service projects.

Despite cancelling the remake, Ubisoft stressed that it is not abandoning the Prince of Persia brand entirely. The company said the franchise could return in the future under its reorganized Creative House structure, which groups key IPs based on genre and long-term strategy.

The decision has sparked fresh discussion across the industry about the pressure facing major publishers, particularly when it comes to reviving legacy franchises while meeting modern production costs, player expectations, and quality benchmarks.
