Ubisoft has canceled another project, this time Alterra, a game inspired by Animal Crossing.

The decision to cancel Alterra was made internally at the Ubisoft Montreal studio. Alterra had been in development for 3 years before it was recently shut down.

Even though it’s widely known that Ubisoft has been doing mass layoffs lately, there is currently no confirmation of employees being laid off (at least when it comes to the Alterra situation). The developers, however, have been moved to other projects within Ubisoft. So it’s not a complete disaster for the people, more like a reorganization.

Before it was canceled, the game was supposed to be a cozy social sim, something like Animal Crossing. You would play on your own island with NPCs called Matterlings, and you could enter other biomes and worlds. So basically a mix of Animal Crossing and Minecraft.

It’s not officially confirmed, but it’s being said that the game was canceled because Ubisoft is going through a major reorganization. They are canceling projects that don’t meet expectations or don’t fit into their new strategy.

Another Ubisoft project has been shut down, and there’s nothing coming from the cozy sim competition to Animal Crossing. But the good thing is that the developers didn’t lose their jobs (at least based on current information).

Alterra looked like a really interesting idea, but Ubisoft is currently cutting everything that isn’t a guaranteed hit.
Most likely because of the rough situation the whole company is in right now.

Alterra was a cancelled Ubisoft Montreal life-simulation game, reported as an Animal Crossing inspired game. It featured creature-collecting, resource gathering across different biomes, and "Matterling" NPCs. The project was reportedly axed in April 2026 after roughly 3 years of development.
