Ubisoft Boss publicly defended Sony's disc-free future

Ubisoft boss defended Sony over its decision to remove physical game discs, saying that getting rid of discs also has its advantages.

While the same debate continues across the internet over Sony's decision to stop releasing games on physical discs starting in 2028, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot has come to the defense of Sony's controversial decision. He believes that the transition to fully digital distribution will not seriously disrupt the industry and that it could even bring certain advantages, including cheaper consoles for consumers.

During a conversation with investors, Guillemot said that the experience from the PC market actually shows that the transition to digital distribution has contributed to the growth of the gaming industry.

According to Guillemot, removing the disc drive from consoles could actually reduce the production costs of future consoles, allowing manufacturers to offer much more affordable devices. However, he also admitted that there are several downsides to this approach, such as the disappearance of the used game market. Still, he believes those drawbacks will not significantly affect the gaming industry as a whole.
