At a recent meeting with investors, Ubisoft's top man Yves Guillemot had to answer a question that fans of the franchise have been asking for years: where did Watch Dogs actually disappear to?
According to a report by journalist Stephen Totilo, Guillemot told investors that the company still considers this series an "important brand for the future." However, behind that diplomatic phrase lies a harsh reality – the head of Ubisoft practically confirmed that at this moment, no new Watch Dogs game is in active development. In other words, the franchise that was announced a decade ago as Ubisoft's answer to GTA is on forced ice while management tries to figure out what it even wants with it after the lukewarm reception and sales figures recorded by Watch Dogs: Legion.
The only project currently moving is a live-action movie. Production is finished, additional reshoots have been done as well, but Ubisoft and the production company remain silent about it. There is no trailer, no concrete promotion, and not even a tentative release date.
However, according to findings by the Insider Gaming website, Ubisoft has a plan to connect the movie with gaming, though not in the way many had hoped. Instead of a real sequel, the French publisher reportedly plans to accompany the film's premiere with the release of an expanded version of the latest game — Watch Dogs: Legion – Director’s Cut.
Such a move seems quite bizarre even for Ubisoft, which has been clinging desperately to remakes and proven hits in recent years. Legion was released in 2020, represents the newest title in the franchise, and already has native support for current consoles. To make matters more comical, the original creative director will not participate in this potential "Director's Cut," since he left Ubisoft back in early 2026.
In its time, Legion brought fascinating ambition with the mechanic of recruiting any passerby on the streets of dystopian London, but that idea in practice remained only half-utilized. If the rumors about the Director's Cut come true, the question remains whether Ubisoft is actually preparing a more substantial upgrade of mechanics or just trying to make a quick buck off the film's premiere.
