Take-Two Interactive, the company behind GTA, recently laid off part of its AI team as well as the Head of AI, as confirmed by Luke Dicken on LinkedIn.
Even though they themselves recently said that they actively use and support AI, RIGHT AFTER that they laid off people working on AI. The exact number of people laid off is unknown, it is only known that an unspecified portion of the team was affected.
Which means it’s possible that a lot of people were laid off, but it’s also possible that it was just a smaller part.
However, this does not mean that AI has failed. It is possible that they are restructuring the AI team by changing direction and maybe outsourcing AI, using existing tools instead of their own, and who knows what else.
Take-Two has already done layoffs before this, so it is most likely due to cost reduction and a focus on safe hits like GTA 6.
Although, we know for sure that they use AI only as a tool and do not want to depend on it.
"AI cannot make a game like GTA," said the Take-Two CEO.
This is actually important for the entire gaming industry, because it shows that AI does not necessarily mean the future, but that even companies still don’t know how to use it. They are still searching for a balance between AI and human work.
Even companies that hype AI are not sure what they are actually doing.
Everyone is talking about AI… but no one actually has a stable plan yet.
Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc. is an American video game holding company based in New York City founded by Ryan Brant in September 1993.
