The ban on mobile phones in schools did not bring any results - let alone the results that parents and others expected.
A large American study recently showed that phone bans in schools have literally zero effect on exam results.
This research included more than 400,000 schools between 2019 and 2026, and during that long period we all realized the same thing; no significant improvement was noticed in attention, school attendance, nor a reduction in online violence.
The idea that banning phones would automatically improve education turns out not to be as simple as we all thought it would be.
Exam results remained literally the same, and at first disciplinary problems actually increased. Literally the opposite effect of what everyone hoped would happen.
Student well-being dropped in the short term, most likely because students had a hard time dealing with the sudden change in habits.
But it's not all meaningless; THERE ARE LONG-TERM EFFECTS!
After several years, discipline successfully stabilized, and student well-being later improved. Phone usage during classes did indeed decrease compared to before.
Bans may have a slower effect than schools expect, but they are still there. Just very small.
Many countries are already introducing phone bans in schools, for example France and South Korea are already tightening the rules strictly.
Similar studies from the United Kingdom have shown very similar results.
The trend of bans is growing despite mixed research results...
Phones really are a distraction, but the main problem is that the ban itself obviously does not solve deeper issues in education or student behavior.
Maybe the focus should actually be on how technology is used, not just on strict bans.
Phones in the classroom are a problem, and bans reduce device usage - but there is definitely no evidence that such bans automatically improve grades and student results.
Schools may need to find a smarter balance between technology and teaching.
