Korean studio Shift Up, the team behind Stellar Blade, angered a lot of fans by recently releasing an AI-generated music video. No, this time the controversy wasn't over nudity or something morally questionable, but over the very nature of the video itself.

Specifically, the issue arose around the video called BloodRain, which the studio admitted was made with the help of artificial intelligence tools (although that was obvious from the very first second of the video). The team actually emphasized that the entire video wasn't created from scratch, but rather "brought to life" using these tools, and that the footage itself was actually taken directly from the game.

The video sparked a lot of negative reactions, including my own—especially considering the commercial success of Stellar Blade and the fact that the company earns a massive amount of money from gacha games like NIKKE: Goddess of Victory.

However, it turns out we gamers just got it all wrong, so Shift Up CEO Hyung-Tae Kim is here to explain to us where the mistake lies and what exactly we fail to understand:

"EVIE, the character at the heart of this video, was created from head to toe by our talented artists and modelers through more than a year of dedicated work. The AI is not creating her from scratch. It is rendering and presenting the character based on the data, designs, and craftsmanship our team created."

I think it's very obvious to everyone that Evie herself as a character wasn't generated by AI, but everything else related to this video was. Parts of her suit literally vanish and reappear from frame to frame, and the walls are plastered with posters written in some dumb, meaningless AI language.

Even if we put all that aside, the biggest problem is that the song itself was completely generated using these technologies, which is even more ironic given that Stellar Blade was hugely praised for its soundtrack.

No matter how many negative reactions they draw, bad publicity is still publicity, so we shouldn't expect a reduced use of AI in game development—especially since Shift Up itself, and Hyung personally, are huge advocates for using artificial intelligence.
