Sony has introduced a new game ownership verification system… but it’s not what people thought it would be!

After Sony was accused of secretly introducing a new ownership verification system where players would have to log in within 30 days to confirm ownership — otherwise the game would become unplayable — Sony came out publicly and said that the verification system is real; BUT NOT THE WAY PEOPLE THOUGHT!

The ownership verification will be one-time, not ongoing as we originally believed.
When you purchase a digital game, you receive a temporary 30-day license. But as soon as you start downloading the game in order to play it; IT THEN SWITCHES TO A PERMANENT LICENSE!

So there’s no monthly verification that everyone was worried about, nor a constant online check; you only need it the first time to confirm ownership through the download.

This is not “always online DRM” and games will not stop working after 30 days, but rather a small technical change in how Sony grants licenses to players.
This is more of an anti-exploit measure than player control.

Before this system, you would receive a permanent license IMMEDIATELY even if you didn’t download the game.
But people started abusing this by buying a game, requesting a refund, and then keeping access to it through modded consoles.

So it makes sense why Sony would invent this new system to fight back against those kind of behavior.

Previously, rumors spread that there would be constant checks every 30 days, which caused backlash because it reminded people of the old Xbox One DRM chaos.

The fear from the community turned out to be an overreaction — but understandable, because we were worried about our rights and games.

The change is real, but it’s nowhere near as bad as people initially thought.
