“Sony Pictures is in talks to land the Battlefield movie, with Christopher McQuarrie set to direct and Michael B. Jordan producing and potentially starring.”

Video game adaptations have become some of Hollywood’s most sought-after and profitable projects in recent years. After audiences got to see titles such as The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, A Minecraft Movie, Mortal Kombat and the recently released Resident Evil, one of gaming’s longest-running and most beloved military shooter franchises is finally making the kind of progress toward the big screen that fans have been waiting more than a decade to see.

Following a fierce bidding war that erupted in April between major studios and streaming giants including Warner Bros. Discovery, Amazon MGM Studios, Universal and Netflix, the latest reports suggest that Sony Pictures has emerged as the frontrunner and is now close to securing the Battlefield movie package.

Mission: Impossible filmmaker and Creed star lead the project

While the project already has some serious production power behind it, the biggest attention is naturally focused on the names attached to the adaptation.

Christopher McQuarrie is set to write and direct the movie, while also serving as a producer. The acclaimed filmmaker is best known for his work on the Mission: Impossible franchise, The Usual Suspects and Top Gun: Maverick. Interestingly, Top Gun recently crossed paths with Battlefield through DLC content for the latest game, meaning McQuarrie already has a connection to the kind of military spectacle the franchise is known for.

On the acting and production side, Oscar-winning Michael B. Jordan is officially attached as a producer and could also take on the lead role if negotiations and scheduling allow.

Alongside Jordan and his Outlier Society production company, the project also involves Jesse Stern of Electronic Arts, Carter Swan of Emerald Neon, as well as Roy Lee and Miri Yoon of Vertigo.

Jordan, fresh off his acclaimed performance in last year’s Sinners, is currently working on The Thomas Crown Affair, which is scheduled to hit theaters in March 2027. Battlefield could therefore become another major franchise for the actor and filmmaker.

Many Marvel fans have also been hoping to see Jordan return in Black Panther 3, currently expected in 2028. However, taking on a leading role in Battlefield could make such a return more difficult depending on production schedules.

Could Battlefield go head-to-head with the Call of Duty movie?

After failed attempts to bring Battlefield to the screen in 2012 and 2016, the latest project appears to be making significantly more concrete progress. At the same time, it could take one of gaming’s biggest rivalries and move it from consoles and PCs directly to the global box office.

A movie adaptation of Call of Duty is also in development, specifically set within the franchise’s Modern Warfare universe.

The project is being directed by Peter Berg, with Taylor Sheridan involved in the screenplay, and is currently scheduled to arrive in theaters on June 30, 2028.

Battlefield does not yet have an official release date, but the pace of negotiations and the talent already attached to the project suggest that both movies could potentially arrive within a similar timeframe.

If that happens, years of arguments between players over whether Battlefield or Call of Duty is the superior military shooter could eventually be settled somewhere entirely different — at movie theaters around the world.
