“Devolver Digital and developer Croteam have announced a new Serious Sam game that is still in the early stages of development.”

Serious Sam underwent modernization across its last few titles, but it's fair to say that it wasn't particularly successful. All the newer games were plagued by poor technical performance and changes that fans of the series didn't like. Sam even saw a roguelike version of himself, but that too failed to attract players, even though Croteam didn't work on it.

The Croatian studio has now given up on trying to transition and draw in new fans through changes, so what awaits us is a return to the old formula—not through a remaster or remake, but through a completely new game titled Serious Sam: The Third Encounter. The plot picks up right where things left off with The Second Encounter.

Croteam claims that this time they will stay true to raw bullet-hell action with no cover, calculating, or tactics—just pure shooting against hordes of enemies charging and firing at the same time.

As for the weapon arsenal, iconic favorites like the minigun and the massive cannon will remain at our disposal, but that doesn't mean it won't be expanded—far from it. We will need plenty of destructive weapons to battle the alien hordes, the developers state. This time, the battles will take place on previously unseen alien planets. The new worlds are considerably denser, visually richer, and more vibrant.

The game will also be playable cooperatively, and its visual style is reminiscent of Serious Sam: Shatterverse. Only the PC version has been confirmed.
