Sony is now under more pressure than ever because a retailers association has strongly criticized the decision to remove physical discs.

The new controversy surrounding Sony's decision to completely stop releasing new PlayStation games on physical discs starting in 2028 continues to grow. This time, an association of independent video game retailers has spoken out, calling the controversial decision "a triumph of corporate convenience over consumer choice." They also warned that this move will have serious consequences for all gamers and the video game retail industry.

The association of independent video game retailers claims that Sony, with this highly controversial decision, is not only putting physical game stores at risk but also the right of players to choose how they buy and own their games. They also especially point out that physical disc editions allow resale, lending, as well as game collecting and the long-term preservation of video games, while digital editions leave users tied to a single storefront and its terms of service.

This is just the latest in a series of reactions following a petition with hundreds of thousands of signatures, PlayStation Plus subscription cancellations, and numerous criticisms across social media.

The opposition to Sony's decision continues to grow, and now retail representatives have joined the discussion, arguing that the company is putting profit ahead of consumer interests.

However, despite the growing criticism from players, retailers, and various organizations, there are currently no signs that Sony plans to abandon its move toward a fully digital future for PlayStation.
