"For years, fans have had the same question; "How is it possible that Resident Evil has never been set in Japan?" And it looks like Capcom has finally given us an interesting answer."

Resident Evil in Japan? Capcom says they have seriously thought about it, and the way things are going; IT'S POSSIBLE WE COULD ACTUALLY GET IT SOMEDAY!

For years, fans have had the same question;
"How is it possible that Resident Evil has never been set in Japan?" And it looks like Capcom has finally given us an interesting answer.

Producer Masato Kumazawa stated that the development team has genuinely considered the idea of setting one of the Resident Evil games in Japan, but so far they have not found a concept that felt convincing enough to move forward with.

And even though Resident Evil is actually a Japanese franchise, almost all of the main games take place either in America, Europe, or fictional cities and villages inspired by the West. Even iconic locations like the Spanish village from Resident Evil 4 or the Eastern European setting of Resident Evil Village are far from Japan. Japan has practically never been the main location.

Honestly, the potential is HUGE! Fans have spent years imagining things like haunted Japanese villages, abandoned temples, urban legends, yokai-inspired biological horror, an infected Tokyo, etc etc... And honestly it sounds like something that would fit the Resident Evil franchise PERFECTLY, especially now that Capcom is experimenting much more with atmosphere and psychological horror than they were ten years ago.

Fans have been asking for this for a very long time anyway, and many people wonder how they have not ALREADY done it. A lot of fans believe a Japanese setting would give the series a completely fresh energy after decades of Western locations. Of course, there are also people who think that the American movie vibe is part of Resident Evil's identity and that the formula should not be changed too much.

To be clear, Capcom has not announced a Resident Evil game set in Japan. But for the first time, it sounds like the idea is no longer just fan fiction, but something the developers have actually discussed and seriously considered.

If a Resident Evil game in Japan ever happens; a haunted Japanese village combined with classic Resident Evil themes could become one of the most interesting settings the series HAS EVER HAD!
