Rayman Legends is coming back... But not in the way everyone expected. They surprised us by making the game no longer just a 2D experience.
Ubisoft finally revealed Rayman Legends Retold during the Sony State of Play live event. This game is actually a remake of one of the most praised platformers of all time, but the biggest surprise is not the graphics, but the fact that the game will no longer focus only on the 2D experience!
According to preview impressions and information that leaked before the reveal, this new Rayman Legends Retold game introduces completely new 3D sections alongside the classic 2D platformer gameplay.
Yes, there really are 3D parts, and that is the biggest new addition here. The biggest novelty is the new 3D cutscenes that supposedly appear between the classic levels in the game. Some sources compare them to Star Fox style gameplay, where the player flies through levels and fights enemies from a different perspective. Of course the main focus is still on 2D platforming, but Ubisoft is clearly trying to make the remake more than just a graphical upgrade.
This is where the drama really started, because many people think that the original Rayman Legends is already practically a perfect game and that it does not need a remake at all.
But on the other hand, part of the community thinks that these new 3D ideas are exactly the reason why the project even exists.
It is not just a remake either, because according to leaks Rayman Legends Retold supposedly brings new skins, online co-op for up to 4 players, and a redesign of Rayman’s appearance. Additional content that did not even exist in the original, and much more. Because of that, some fans are even claiming that this feels more like a reinterpretation than a classic remake.
Rayman Legends Retold looks like one of the weirdest remake projects in recent years. Instead of just increasing the resolution and calling it a day, Ubisoft tried to do something new and unique by expanding the game with new 3D sections and additional content.
Now only one question remains; do you touch a masterpiece remake and make it even better... Or ruin one of the greatest platformer games ever made?
