The sales of PS5 games on disc are dropping drastically... More than ever! New data has shown.
New data shows that the vast majority of PlayStation games today are purchased completely digitally, with around 76% to 95% of sales now coming from digital versions of games, while physical editions continue to see a major decline. FEWER AND FEWER PLAYERS ARE BUYING DISC GAMES FOR PLAYSTATION 5!
It seems that physical copies are slowly becoming a minority and a real rarity in the gaming industry.
Players are switching to digital game purchases most likely because digital games are instantly available without going to a real-life store. And besides that, Sony often gives really big discounts through the PlayStation Store, so when you add it all up, it’s no surprise that more and more players are using Digital Edition models of the PlayStation 5 console.
Convenience is obviously becoming much more important than owning a physical disc.
Physical editions are definitely losing the battle against digital purchases. Sales of physical games in the USA and Europe continue to drop more and more every year. Many modern collector's edition packages today don’t even include a disc at all. And some analysts believe that PlayStation 6 could completely remove the disc drive. It seems like the gaming industry is moving more and more toward an all-digital future.
However, fans still remain divided. Some players still prefer discs because of collecting and reselling games, but also because of nostalgia.
Digital games cannot be resold or lent to friends, and on Reddit many also claim that physical copies give a sense of true ownership, unlike digital versions of games which are completely under the control of Sony.
The debate between digital and physical games continues to go deeper and deeper.
Realistically, digital versions bring more profit to Sony. Digital sales mean that Sony takes a larger percentage of revenue, with no costs for printing discs, boxes, distribution, nothing... PSN and the digital ecosystem are becoming an increasingly important part of the PlayStation business. Sony is clearly pushing PlayStation toward a fully digital future.
Most PlayStation 5 games today are purchased digitally, and sales of physical discs continue to see a major decline.
But despite all of that, many players still don’t want physical copies to completely disappear.
It seems that the gaming industry is slowly entering an era where discs will become a true rarity, and maybe even completely disappear when PlayStation 6 releases!
