“Phantom Blade Zero will feature over 50 bosses, adaptive AI difficulty, and a combat system designed to eliminate frustrating repetition.”

Phantom Blade Zero is shaping up to be one of the most ambitious action games of 2026, featuring more than 50 boss encounters, an extensive weapon arsenal, and an adaptive difficulty system designed to challenge players without unnecessary frustration.

With its October 29 release date approaching, Phantom Blade Zero continues to attract attention from players and the gaming industry. Early hands-on impressions have been encouraging, while the game's pre-order performance suggests considerable interest in S-GAME's upcoming action RPG.

According to estimates from Alinea Analytics, the title secured approximately 300,000 Steam pre-orders shortly after they became available, alongside a strong showing on Steam's sales charts.

In recent interviews with Asian and international gaming publications, S-GAME founder and game director Liang Qiwei, also known as Soulframe Liang, shared new details about the game's bosses, combat mechanics, difficulty settings, and progression systems.

More than 50 bosses and an extensive weapon arsenal

Keeping combat engaging throughout a lengthy action RPG is no small challenge, particularly when players can spend dozens of hours exploring its world.

S-GAME aims to address that challenge through enemy variety and an unusually large collection of weapons.

According to Liang, Phantom Blade Zero will feature at least 50 boss encounters, with the final number potentially being even higher.

These encounters are closely connected to the game's weapon progression. Players will be able to collect around 30 primary weapons and more than 20 secondary weapons, offering a wide range of combat styles and strategic possibilities.

Each weapon is designed to provide a distinct experience rather than simply serving as a stronger version of equipment already available.

The variety also extends beyond major boss battles. Regular enemies feature different body types, fighting styles, and combat strategies, with their complexity increasing as players progress through the game.

S-GAME wants players to continuously encounter new challenges rather than rely on the same tactics throughout the entire adventure.

Hellwalker difficulty features adaptive enemy AI

Players looking for a serious challenge will have access to a special difficulty setting called Hellwalker.

Rather than relying exclusively on traditional difficulty adjustments, such as increasing enemy health or damage output, S-GAME is introducing a more dynamic approach to combat.

On Hellwalker difficulty, enemies use adaptive artificial intelligence to respond to player behavior.

Instead of repeating predictable attack patterns, bosses can react to the player's actions, recognize certain habits, and adjust their strategies during combat.

The goal is to create encounters that feel closer to fighting skilled human opponents, where timing, observation, and adaptability become essential to survival.

Higher difficulty settings can also introduce additional enemy abilities and attack variations, making the experience more demanding without simply turning every opponent into a damage sponge.

It's an approach that could make Phantom Blade Zero particularly appealing to experienced action game players looking for a challenge that rewards skill rather than patience alone.

No more repeating entire boss fights

Despite its dark atmosphere and demanding combat, S-GAME has repeatedly emphasized that Phantom Blade Zero is not intended to be a traditional Soulslike.

One of the clearest examples is how the game handles multi-phase boss battles.

In many action RPGs, dying during the second or third phase of a boss encounter means starting the entire fight again.

Phantom Blade Zero takes a different approach.

If players die during a later phase, they can restart from that phase instead of repeating the earlier portions of the encounter.

This allows players to focus on learning the mechanics of the phase that defeated them rather than spending additional time replaying sections they have already mastered.

The developers believe this approach preserves the challenge while reducing one of the most common sources of frustration in difficult action games.

Defeated enemies won't respawn after resting or dying

S-GAME is also moving away from another familiar Soulslike mechanic: enemy respawning.

In traditional Souls games, resting at a checkpoint or dying typically causes defeated enemies to return.

That won't be the case in Phantom Blade Zero.

Once regular enemies are defeated, they generally remain defeated, allowing players to explore previously cleared areas without repeatedly fighting the same opponents.

This change is intended to encourage exploration and maintain a more natural sense of progression through the game's environments.

Combined with its boss checkpoint system, the decision reflects S-GAME's broader philosophy of delivering challenging combat without unnecessary repetition.

Phantom Blade Zero launches October 29

Phantom Blade Zero is scheduled to launch on October 29, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and PC, with the PC version available through Steam and the Epic Games Store.

The game combines cinematic kung fu combat, a dark fantasy setting inspired by Chinese martial arts traditions, and an extensive selection of weapons and enemy encounters.

With more than 50 bosses, adaptive AI on higher difficulties, and several player-friendly design decisions, Phantom Blade Zero is attempting to strike a balance between demanding action and accessible progression.

Whether these ideas work as intended will become clear when the game launches later this month, but S-GAME's approach already makes it one of October's more interesting releases.
