“Since its latest update, the PC version of NieR: Automata has accidentally become over 300GB "heavier," though it is still not heavier than Call of Duty.”

If you have tried installing NieR: Automata in the past couple of days, you have probably noticed how the game suddenly jumped from 50GB to over 350GB. Usually, an increase in space requirements is a good sign, unless we are talking about Call of Duty. It is especially good when we consider that NieR: Automata is one of the best games of all time, so any new content is welcome.

The jump to 366GB occurred due to a bizarre bug that hit the Steam version in the latest patch launched by Square Enix on November 5, 2026. It is worth noting that this is the first update in the last 5 years—more precisely, since July 2021. The patch aimed to add support for Korean, Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese (along with minor changes to executable files and the removal of old installation scripts for Windows 7/8/10).

The technical cause of the problem itself is that the base game was duplicated into each DLC, and since the game is sold as the Game of the YoRHa Edition—which comes with eight separate DLC packs (the 3C3C1D119440927 expansion, Grimoire Weiss Pod, various Pod skins, masks, and a set of wallpapers)—it is no wonder why the number increased that much. To be precise, the size of the base game is around 40GB, and adding 8 DLCs multiplied by that number yields the figure mentioned above.

It should also be pointed out that the game won't download 9 times and won't take up that much space on your drive. The only difference is that Steam requires you to have 366GB of free disk space in order to start the installation. The bug exclusively affected the Steam version.

As expected, the news sparked plenty of negative comments and reviews on Steam, and how could it not when the game now requires 1.5 times more space than GTA 6. The only logical explanation is that 66 GB is for 2B.

All jokes aside, Square Enix spoke out on November 6 via their official accounts and announced that they are working on fixes. For now, the only solution is to disable downloading the DLCs during installation if you don't have enough space to start the process itself.
