New Steam Controller Could Cost $99, Leak Says
A New Steam Controller is coming, and according to leaks, it could cost as much as $99!!
The information comes from an early review video that was accidentally published ahead of time. Valve has not officially confirmed the price of this controller yet.
This high $99 price places it above standard controllers, but still below pro models.
Let’s compare;
PlayStation 5 DualSense = $70, standard
Xbox Controller = $65, also standard
And then you have pro controllers like Elite and Edge, which go up to $150–200+
That means this Steam Controller sits in the upper mid-range, almost premium.
The Steam Controller has some specific features, which is why it’s more expensive.
Those features include dual trackpads; instead of classic analog sticks in some situations.
Hall Effect analog sticks; meaning less drift issues.
The focus of this controller appears to be more on PC flexibility than on the classic console experience.
However, that’s exactly where the problems start.
For $99, some people expect more. Like premium features such as ultra-high polling rate.
The competition is strong in this price range, which doesn’t help Valve, since their hardware often has delays or changing plans.
In other words; the price is right on the edge of whether it’s worth it or not.
This is the second generation of the Steam Controller, and the original was released in 2015.
The controller was originally announced alongside Steam Machine and the Steam Frame VR headset.
The $99 price for the Steam Controller is still just a leak and not confirmed. But if it’s true, Valve will have to justify it with unique features.
BUT, if they actually make the trackpad + PC functionality stand out compared to others, this could be the most interesting controller for PC.
But if they don’t get it right; people will just go for a classic Xbox Controller or PlayStation controller and save money.
