The opening ceremony of BlizzCon 2026 delivered the kind of news dark fantasy fans have been waiting years to hear. Blizzard Entertainment has officially confirmed a partnership with Netflix, with their first joint project set to be an animated television series based in the infamous world of Diablo.
Blizzard President Johanna Faries personally announced the franchise's move into the world of transmedia entertainment. While fans were not given a first look at the animated series, an official teaser trailer, or a release date, Faries confirmed that the project is currently in active development and represents only the beginning of a much broader partnership.
Sanctuary is expanding — and Warcraft and Overwatch could be next
Although specific story details remain under wraps, official statements suggest that the series aims to expand the familiar mythology of Sanctuary beyond the games themselves.
Faries described Diablo as only an “icebreaker” for what may come next, revealing that serious discussions are already underway regarding similar projects involving Overwatch, Warcraft, and other major IPs from Blizzard's portfolio.
Further evidence of a broader revitalization of the franchise came during the same event, where Blizzard officially announced Diablo V, currently targeting a 2029 release. Expanding the franchise into streaming therefore appears to be a natural way to keep audiences engaged between major game releases.
The move also fits into the broader strategy of Blizzard's parent company, Microsoft, which has increasingly pushed its gaming franchises toward film and television following the success of productions such as Amazon's Fallout TV series and A Minecraft Movie.
Xbox executives have repeatedly emphasized that today's biggest gaming franchises have become major parts of modern popular culture, with some reaching audiences comparable to the world's biggest cinematic universes.
Netflix continues to expand its gaming adaptations
The partnership with Blizzard is another step in Netflix's long-term push into gaming-related entertainment.
The streaming giant already has a growing catalog of successful adaptations based on franchises including Castlevania, Arcane (League of Legends), Cyberpunk 2077, Tomb Raider, Devil May Cry, The Witcher, and many others.
The growing demand for video game adaptations is no longer simply a trend — it has become an established part of the entertainment industry.
While competitors continue developing projects based on franchises such as God of War, Far Cry, and Life Is Strange, Netflix is looking to maintain its position as one of the leading platforms for gaming-related adaptations and entertainment.
The recent exclusive presentation of an extended Grand Theft Auto VI preview on the platform, which reportedly attracted thousands of new subscribers, further demonstrated the enormous influence gaming content can have on global audiences.
Although the animated Diablo series remains in the early stages of production and it may be some time before fans see the first footage, the message from BlizzCon is clear: Blizzard's biggest franchises are no longer limited to video games and are increasingly expanding into other major forms of entertainment.
