The author of Metro, Dmitry Glukhovsky, has given new information about the future of the franchise and has indicated that the next game in the Metro franchise will be a darker game known for both its tone and narrative focus.
According to Glukhovsky, "the next game will be darker than anything that has ever been seen in the Metro series," in regards to both tone and narrative. His reason for creating this darkness was to have it reflect many real-world events and themes, as well as to continue to combine fiction with social commentaries on such things from the original Metro game to 2030.
The Metro games have always had a very strong atmosphere and moral complexity; however, the new game aims to push those elements even further. The next game will also provide a much greater emphasis on the story, with deeper emotional content and more serious subject matter.
Glukhovsky's participation in the new Metro game will ensure that the story continues to closely resemble his original vision for the series, yet evolving the tone (and not just the graphics).
Although no release date or any actual game details have been released, the direction alone makes it apparent that the next Metro will be one of the most intense games in the entire Metro franchise.
