Something crazy just happened; Bungie's experiment has, believe it or not, revived Marathon. The new PvE mode tripled the player count!
Bungie recently released Vault Breaker, an experimental PvE mode for Marathon, and the first results have shown that this move brought a large number of players back to the game. Just a few hours after the update launched, the number of concurrent players on Steam increased by three times, reaching more than 14,800 active users.
Unlike the standard PvPvE gameplay, Vault Breaker temporarily removes conflicts with other teams and focuses exclusively on PvE combat, challenges, exploration, and fighting enemies controlled by the game.
Unfortunately, the mode will only be available for two weeks, until August 4, because Bungie wants to gather as much player feedback as possible before deciding whether to permanently add it to the game during Season 3.
The first fan reactions have been mostly very positive. Many players praise the fact that they can finally explore the map and progress without the constant threat of other teams, while some honestly believe that Bungie should add a permanent PvE option.
The experimental Vault Breaker has shown that PvE content can significantly increase interest in Marathon, at least in the short term.
Now it's up to Bungie to decide whether this mode will become a permanent part of the game or remain just a successful experiment that briefly brought players back.
