Intel has announced a new set of security issues affecting several of its processors and associated hardware. The firm has already begun to distribute patches to protect against the issues and states that an attacker would need to have local system access to exploit these vulnerabilities.

According to Intel’s advisory, the vulnerabilities affect various areas of the platform, including the CPU, motherboard, and firmware. Although these vulnerabilities could allow an attacker to gain privileges or access to sensitive data, in most scenarios, they would require direct access to the compromised system.

This significantly reduces the risk to the average user, who would need physical or already-compromised system access before attempting to exploit these vulnerabilities.

Intel has collaborated with hardware and software partners to distribute security updates and firmware patches. These will likely arrive in the form of BIOS updates, OS patches, and firmware updates, depending on the affected system.

Security researchers who discovered the vulnerabilities have responsibly disclosed them, allowing Intel time to develop patches before making the details public.

Although the vulnerabilities are serious in nature, Intel states that no exploitation has been seen yet. Users and administrators should still install the latest security updates and firmware patches as they become available.
