Indie Pass game subscription service faces early backlash

"A new subscription service focused on indie games is facing criticism from players, raising concerns about value, visibility, and its impact on developers."

It goes without saying that any product receives some criticism before or even after its release, no matter what it is, and Indie Pass, which is a new subscription service with exclusive focus on Indie titles, is no exception. It is set for release on April 13, 2026.

The thing worth noting about Indie Pass is the low price of the service: for just $6.99 per month one gets access to more than 70 titles and genres.

However, the goal set by the creators of Indie Pass is quite ambitious since it aims to help smaller developers and studios improve the visibility of their products, but the players have already started to boycott the very idea of having only unknown games available on the service and start raising the question regarding the value of such a subscription.

One more issue that concerns the players is the way the revenue is shared on the platform: the profit is divided depending on the playing time on each particular title, and therefore some people are concerned that "viral" titles would get much more profit from it than games which were not.

Players' communities are also quite skeptical about this initiative: some say that they don't know some titles at all while the others doubt the necessity of such a service.

Speaking of subscriptions, recently there has been seen a growing trend of subscribing in the video games industry. Although subscriptions become increasingly widespread and popular, the issue of the quality of these services remains, as well as whether subscriptions are sustainable enough.

However, one thing is clear: Indie Pass is a good idea, and its creators have the desire to help smaller studios gain the attention of the whole world and get on the video game scene, but that doesn't mean only the developers' needs should be considered, because the players also need to be convinced.
