"Hytale hit Early Access on Jan 13, 2026. Revived by original founders after Riot's exit, the sandbox RPG drew 2.8M players on its opening day."

ORBIS - After years of technical hurdles and a dramatic corporate near-death experience, the highly anticipated sandbox RPG Hytale has officially entered its Early Access phase. Hypixel Studios, now operating as an independent entity once again, released the playable build to the public on January 13, 2026. This milestone marks a radical shift in the project’s trajectory, following the original founders' decision to buy back the rights to the game after its sudden cancellation by Riot Games in mid-2025.

The launch represents a significant "return to roots" for the development team. Simon Collins-Laflamme, co-founder of Hypixel Studios, confirmed that the current release is built upon a "legacy" version of the game engine from four years ago. This move effectively scraps a more recent, cross-platform engine rewrite that had contributed to years of internal delays. To reach this launch state, engineers reportedly merged over 300 separate code branches to stabilize the older build, prioritizing immediate player access over long-term technical perfection.

Despite the excitement surrounding the release, the studio has been remarkably transparent regarding the game's current lack of polish. Developers have described the Early Access build as "raw" and "unfinished," warning players to expect bugs and missing features during these initial stages. The available version focuses primarily on core exploration and creative tools, while more advanced components, such as the structured "Adventure Mode" and official competitive minigames, remain in development for future updates.

The independence of Hypixel Studios has been a focal point of the launch strategy. Collins-Laflamme noted that the reacquisition of the intellectual property was a high-stakes gamble funded personally by the founders. Early financial data suggests the gamble may be paying off; the studio announced that revenue from pre-orders and early supporters has already secured at least two additional years of development funding. This independence allows the team to pursue its original 2018 vision without the pressures of a major corporate publisher.

Early player reception has been massive, with the studio reporting over one million participants on opening day. While the experience is currently restricted to PC users, the team has expressed a commitment to a "community-first" development cycle, promising frequent patches and a transparent roadmap. For a community that spent seven years in uncertainty, the ability to finally step into the world of Orbis, even in a rudimentary state, is being hailed as a "miracle" by its creators and a new chapter for the sandbox genre.
