Horns is an ambitious Open-World RPG mostly made by one person
“Horns is an ambitious dark fantasy open-world RPG by solo developer Rados Nikolić, inspired by classic RPGs, souls-like games, and exploration storytelling.”
Horns, a dark fantasy open-world RPG created by programmer and writer Rados Nikolić, is one of those indie projects that immediately stands out because of the way it is being made. There is no major studio behind it, no publisher, and no traditional funding, yet the game aims to deliver a serious RPG experience inspired by some of the genre’s most memorable classics.
Nikolić has been programming for 17 years and has been a passionate gamer for more than three decades. Around two years ago, he decided to start developing an open-world RPG based on his own story, HORNS, which he had previously written. That idea eventually evolved into a game that combines dark epic fantasy, exploration, classic RPG systems, and a more demanding approach to combat.
One of the most interesting aspects of the project is its production process. Many of the characters in the game are based on scanned people from Nikolić’s surroundings, while a large portion of the body and facial movements, as well as the performances used for animations, are done by Nikolić himself. The goal is to make the game feel and look more polished despite being built with limited resources and without a full development studio.
According to its creator, Horns is first and foremost a classic open-world RPG with old-school RPG elements. However, the game also carries influences from several other genres and titles, including Max Payne 1, Resident Evil 1, The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, Death Stranding, and souls-like games. At the beginning, Horns may feel similar to a souls-like experience, but it gradually changes its rhythm and approach as the game opens up.
The game is set in a dark fantasy world and places strong emphasis on discovering and following the story. Players will be able to uncover the narrative through various elements, including StoryNotes, the protagonist’s monologues, in-game animations, conversations from random passersby, and environmental details scattered throughout the world.
Although combat is an important part of the experience, Horns is heavily focused on exploration, item discovery, following signs and directions in the world, and slowly learning the rules and atmosphere of the place players find themselves in. Instead of simply pushing players from one objective marker to another, the game encourages them to observe, explore, and understand the world around them.
Nikolić also notes that a small group of talented people has contributed to the project in recent months. Horns has received an original soundtrack, a main theme song, several graphical details, and two voice actors, expanding the production beyond a fully solo effort.
A playable demo is already available and offers around 40 minutes to one hour of gameplay. The full version is expected to last around 30 hours and will likely be priced at approximately $10–15. The full release is planned for late 2026 or early 2027, as the launch has been pushed back to avoid competing directly with several major and highly anticipated games arriving near the end of the year.
Horns is shaping up to be a fascinating indie RPG project, especially for players who enjoy dark fantasy, old-school role-playing systems, exploration-driven storytelling, and ambitious games created with a clear personal vision.
They say he never sleeps! He lives in the blur between code and screen. While the world rushed through levels, he transcribed the cries of fallen bosses and the whispers of the machine. After 30 years in the digital trenches, his ink is binary. He isn't here to review games—he's here to archive the chronicle of our digital existence.
