"Highguard will shut down less than two months after launch as the developers confirm the shooter failed to build a sustainable player base."

Sometimes a game launches with fireworks… and sometimes those fireworks fade far quicker than anyone expected.

That seems to be the case with Highguard, the free-to-play multiplayer shooter from Wildlight Entertainment. Despite arriving with big ambitions and a team of veteran developers behind it, the game will permanently shut down next week after one final update.

The announcement came directly from the developers, who explained that the project simply failed to maintain the kind of community needed to survive in today’s competitive live-service market.

Highguard only launched on January 26, 2026 across PC and consoles, meaning its lifespan will end less than two months after release when servers go offline on March 12.

At first, things didn’t look disastrous. The game reportedly attracted more than two million players during its early days, showing that curiosity around the new shooter was real.

But curiosity doesn’t always turn into long-term commitment. Player numbers dropped rapidly in the weeks after launch, eventually reaching a point where the studio said it could no longer sustain the game.

In a message to the community, the developers thanked players for giving the project a chance but admitted the reality was difficult to ignore: the player base simply wasn’t large enough to support the game in the long run.

Before the servers disappear for good, the team plans to release one final update. The farewell patch will add a new playable character, new weapons, and progression features designed to let players experiment with builds and abilities during the game’s final days.

For some fans, the shutdown is another reminder of how brutal the modern live-service landscape has become. Even projects backed by experienced developers and large publishers can struggle to survive when competing against giants like Apex Legends, Valorant, and Call of Duty.

Highguard itself was developed by industry veterans who previously worked on major franchises including Titanfall and Apex Legends. Yet even that pedigree wasn’t enough to guarantee success.

The game’s rapid decline highlights a growing pattern in the industry: live-service titles often launch with excitement but must maintain constant engagement to survive. If that momentum disappears, even promising games can vanish almost overnight.

For the players who did enjoy Highguard, the remaining days will be a final chance to jump back into the arena before the servers go dark.

And in the fast-moving world of online shooters, that might be the most bittersweet ending of all.
