The tradition of PC players having to wait years for Rockstar's biggest releases could become a thing of the past with the arrival of the most anticipated game of this generation.
According to a new report from reputable outlet GamesBeat, citing four independent industry sources familiar with Rockstar Games' plans, Grand Theft Auto VI is expected to arrive on PC during the first quarter of 2027, meaning no later than the end of March.
If the information proves accurate, PC players will be able to explore Vice City just a few months after the game's official launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, scheduled for November 19. The period of console exclusivity would therefore last between two and four months, marking an unusually short window for a project of this scale.
A major shift compared to GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2
For comparison, fans had to wait one year and seven months for the PC version of Grand Theft Auto V following its initial console release in 2013. A similar situation occurred with Red Dead Redemption 2, which launched on consoles in October 2018, while its PC version did not arrive until November 2019. Even Grand Theft Auto IV took approximately seven months to make its way to PC.
Strauss Zelnick, CEO of parent publisher Take-Two Interactive, hinted at such a possibility earlier this year. Although he emphasized that the company rarely launches its flagship titles simultaneously across all platforms, he openly acknowledged the enormous demand and importance of the PC market, which continues to grow financially year after year.
Why do consoles still get priority at launch?
Former Rockstar producer John Ricchio, who worked on projects such as Red Dead Redemption, Max Payne 3, and GTA V, recently explained why Rockstar continues to release its games on consoles before bringing them to PC. Ricchio emphasized that this approach is not about undervaluing PC players, but rather about managing development resources from a logistical standpoint.
According to him, it is significantly easier for development teams to begin working within the fixed technical limitations of consoles. When hardware constraints are known in advance, the team can focus on optimization within those boundaries instead of developing a game for extremely powerful PCs first and then attempting to make it run on less capable console hardware. Once the console development process is complete, the team can fully dedicate its efforts to unlocking the PC platform's potential.
Although Rockstar Games has neither officially confirmed nor denied reports of a PC release in the first quarter of 2027, potentially reducing the gap between platform launches to just a few months would demonstrate a new level of adaptation to market trends. For millions of PC players around the world, this is the most optimistic scenario they could have hoped for.
