It is not an uncommon practice in the gaming industry to have studios specialized in specific tasks, but until now, we were not aware of a single case where a company opened a studio specifically dedicated to character creation in games. It seems Rockstar is once again a trendsetter, as we learned that the Los Angeles studio was opened precisely for that purpose.
In part of the cover story for Dazed magazine, Rockstar Games shared several details regarding Grand Theft Auto 6, revealing that after the release of Red Dead Redemption 2, Rockstar doubled its workforce to pull off a project as massive as GTA 6. Considering it had around 2,000 employees in 2018, that would mean it now has around 4,000.
"Every room in the game, somebody thought about this," Garbut explained. "Who's sitting where, what they're drinking, the marks that are left on the table. The pictures on the wall will have the people that are in that room, with their tattoos on their arms and their family behind them. That whole thing has been made, and built, and photographed, and placed in this random room in a random building in a huge city, in a world."
What is also interesting is that they hired stylist Jillian Carr from Miami to help build an authentic fashion ecosystem to capture that cultural diversity. Likewise, they hired professional race car drivers to work on driving handling, and around 50 street artists to work on murals across the map.
Special emphasis was placed on how characters in GTA 6 demonstrate the greatest technological leap Rockstar Games has achieved compared to previous projects. Rockstar stated that GTA 6 features over 600,000 NPC animations, compared to 300,000 in RDR2 and 55,000 in GTA 5. In addition, the map is twice as large as GTA 5 and three times larger than RDR2.
