GOG says that players can make their own physical games
“GOG just took a small jab at Sony by saying that on PC, you can create your own physical copy of your game. GOG took the opportunity to remind PC gamers once again”
GOG just took a small jab at Sony by saying that on PC, you can create your own physical copy of your game.
While the drama surrounding Sony's controversial decision to end physical editions of PlayStation games continues, GOG took the opportunity to remind PC gamers once again about one of the biggest advantages of its platform. That is that games purchased on GOG can be downloaded as offline installation files that users can save themselves or burn onto a disc.
After Sony recently confirmed that it will stop producing physical editions of new PlayStation games starting in 2028, GOG posted a message on social media highlighting that users of its platform own DRM-free installation files.
In other words, players can download the complete game installation, create backup copies on a hard drive, USB drive, or even burn their own DVD or Blu-ray disc, without needing to be connected to the internet or rely on a digital store.
GOG's statement quickly caught the attention of almost the entire gaming community. Many praised the platform for its long-standing commitment to DRM-free distribution and game preservation, while others interpreted the message as a direct jab at Sony amid the growing criticism over the removal of physical game releases.
While Sony is moving toward a fully digital future, GOG used the moment to remind players that on PC, they can still preserve and archive the games they purchase themselves.
This move has further fueled the debate over what it really means to own a digital game and how important video game preservation is for the future of the industry.
