The new God of War game that was announced last night changes the main character for the first time in many years. And we also have some bad news; IT WON'T BE COMING TO PC!
Sony officially announced God of War: Laufey during last night's State of Play. It is the new main game in the God of War series. But the biggest shock is not the new story, it is the fact that Kratos is not the protagonist of this game. Instead, we play as Laufey/Faye, Kratos' wife and Atreus' mother, a character who until now mostly existed through stories and memories.
After her death, the story goes in a completely new direction. Faye awakens in a mysterious world called Everywhen, a kind of afterlife for gods where different mythologies collide. This means the series is seriously stepping outside the boundaries of Greek and Norse mythology for the first time.
The gameplay looks much faster; based on the footage shown, Faye is more agile than Kratos, has more aerial combo moves, and uses magic much more aggressively. Combat in general looks faster and more fluid.
But there is also very bad news for PC players, and that is that God of War: Laufey will probably not be coming to PC, at least not anytime soon. And the reason is not the game itself, but Sony.
Sony has supposedly changed its strategy; because over the last few years Sony released games like God of War Ragnarök, Marvel's Spider-Man, and Ghost of Tsushima on PC after a certain period of time. But now multiple sources claim that Sony has decided to use its biggest single-player exclusives as a reason for people to buy a PlayStation console again, instead of porting them to PC later.
A PC version is not completely impossible, but right now the situation looks very different compared to a few years ago. So do not expect a PC version anytime soon, if it even happens at all.
Besides the fact that Faye is the new protagonist, if you are PC-only, do not expect to be playing this game anytime soon.
For now, it looks like a true PS5 system seller, which is exactly what Sony supposedly wants from its biggest single-player games.
