Sony closed its latest State of Play presentation with a major surprise: the reveal of God of War Laufey, the next installment in the acclaimed God of War franchise from Sony Santa Monica. The game is currently in development exclusively for PlayStation 5, though a release window has not yet been announced.

The reveal came alongside an extended gameplay showcase that confirmed a significant shift for the series. Rather than following Kratos, players will step into the role of Laufey, better known as Faye, the warrior who played a crucial role in the events of the Norse saga and the wife of Kratos.

According to the game's official description, God of War Laufey takes place after Faye's death. However, what was expected to be the end of her journey becomes the beginning of an entirely new adventure. Awakening in a mysterious realm, Faye discovers that the plans she carefully set in motion to protect Kratos and Atreus are now under threat.

To safeguard her family, Faye must venture through a supernatural afterlife known as the Everywhen, a dangerous realm where powerful gods from multiple mythologies battle for influence and control. Along the way, she will encounter formidable enemies and navigate a world filled with powerful magic and ancient secrets.

Gameplay footage showcased a combat system that emphasizes Faye’s speed, precision, and agility. Unlike Kratos’ overwhelming brute force, Faye appears to rely on swift attacks, tactical movement, and relentless pressure to overcome her opponents. The presentation highlighted fast-paced encounters and fluid combat designed around her unique fighting style.

The announcement marks a bold new direction for the franchise, placing one of the series’ most mysterious characters in the spotlight while exploring previously untold parts of the God of War universe. Sony Santa Monica has also indicated that it will share additional details about the decision to shift the focus away from Kratos, as well as more information about the game's story and development in upcoming interviews.

While players will have to wait longer to learn when God of War Laufey will arrive, the reveal has already established it as one of the most talked-about PlayStation exclusives currently in development.
