Gabe Newell was supporting OpenAI back in 2018. DONATED $20M
"Famous Gabe Newell, the man behind Steam, supported OpenAI before all of us! And that was back in 2018. He even donated $20 million to OpenAI"
Famous Gabe Newell, the man behind Steam, supported OpenAI before all of us! And that was back in 2018.
He even donated $20 million to OpenAI and artificial intelligence, and was also the only member of an informal advisory board.
All of this information we know now came out because of the lawsuit between Elon Musk and Sam Altman.
Internal emails from the period between 2016 and 2020 were revealed.
In those emails, it’s clearly shown that Gabe Newell was involved as an advisor, and that his donation to OpenAI was one of the bigger ones at the time, around $20 million.
But it’s not exactly clear how long he stayed involved after that.
This shows that AI wasn’t just some random tech thing — people from the gaming industry already believed in it early on.
And it makes sense that Gabe Newell supported it, because he’s not just a “Steam guy,” but someone who invests in future tech like AI, brain tech, etc.
Back then, OpenAI wasn’t nearly as big as it is today, so this was a more risky but visionary move from Gabe Newell.
At the time, OpenAI was more of a research organization focused on AI experiments in games like Dota. But today, that has changed.
Now, OpenAI is ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT THINGS IN THE WORLD!
Gabe Newell is known for Valve and Steam of course, but he’s also interested in futuristic things like brain-computer tech.
Because of this, it’s now clear how big names from the gaming industry were involved in AI from the very beginning.
This leak also gives insight into the early days of OpenAI, and how people like Elon Musk and others were building the whole story.
And it also changes the perception of Gabe Newell — he’s no longer just a “gaming boss,” but also an AI investor.
Now we know that Gabe Newell was a serious early supporter of OpenAI.
He invested significant money — around $20 million — and had an advisory role in all of it.
Even if it’s still unclear how involved he is today.
Now we have a much clearer look at how OpenAI was actually formed, and who was behind it.
