Europe reportedly wants its own game engine, and this time as an alternative to Unreal Engine and Unity!
Yes, really! European developers want to create their own game engine that would serve as an alternative to Unreal Engine and Unity. This project is being led by former Epic Games director, Arjan Brussee. The focus is on AI tools and European infrastructure.
THIS IS NOT JUST A NEW ENGINE, but also an attempt for Europe to create its own tech alternative to the American tools that already exist.
Right now we know this Engine is called The Immense Engine and that it is still in early development. The focus will be on AI workflow, development automation, and productivity for smaller teams.
It feels more like an AI-first engine than a classic Unreal clone like most others.
This Engine is trying to find its own identity through AI integration, European infrastructure, more modern development, and workflow.
The point is not for this new engine to simply be a better Unreal Engine, but rather an engine built for this new AI era.
Unreal Engine currently dominates the AAA scene and the industry, while Unity lost part of the community’s trust after monetization controversies. Because of that, the industry is now even more keeping an eye out for alternatives.
This is actually very important. AI could drastically change the way games are made, and smaller teams could create much more ambitious projects. However, there is still fear surrounding job automation.
This is more of a story about the future of the entire game development industry than just another generic engine.
The idea of a European Unreal competitor sounds very good and ambitious, and the AI focus gives the project a really interesting identity. But the game engine market is extremely difficult to break into, so we still do not know if it will succeed.
The biggest question of all is whether this can truly attract developers, or if it will remain just another niche project.
