The newest Final Fantasy game, called FINAL FANTASY RESONANCE, has just been announced and is releasing this very year, 2026.

Square Enix recently surprised fans of the franchise during the Nintendo Direct presentation when they revealed a completely new HD-2D RPG, Final Fantasy Resonance! What's more, it's arriving by the end of 2026. If it feels like the title of this new Final Fantasy came straight out of the SNES era, that's completely intentional because the game uses the same HD-2D style popularized by titles like Octopath Traveler and Triangle Strategy, combining pixel art with modern lighting and effects.

What immediately caught many people's attention is that this game is actually a turn-based RPG. In recent years, Final Fantasy has moved more and more toward action through games like Final Fantasy XVI, so a lot of fans have been asking for a return to a more classic combat system. Final Fantasy Resonance looks like a direct answer to what fans have been requesting for a long time. The trailer showed traditional turn-based battles, world exploration, towns, dungeons, and a group of new heroes setting out on a grand fantasy adventure.

The first fan reactions have mostly been very positive. In fact, a large number of fans on social media celebrated the return of the old turn-based system, while others commented that the game looks like a successor to the golden age of JRPGs from the PlayStation 1 and SNES eras.

Final Fantasy Resonance looks like one of the biggest surprises from the Nintendo Direct so far. The combination of HD-2D graphics, classic turn-based combat, and the fact that the game is releasing this very year immediately caught the attention of JRPG fans.

If you love older Final Fantasy games, Octopath Traveler, or just that retro JRPG vibe in general, this is definitely one of the titles worth keeping on your radar.
