EU plans to challenge Google search dominance

"The EU is working on new regulations that could weaken Google’s control over search by forcing data sharing and opening the market to competitors."

The European Commission is pushing ahead with plans to implement a new set of rules designed to address complaints by others about Google’s dominance of the web search marketplace.

Under the planned legislation, large companies would be required to share their user-generated data with smaller firms at no cost. This would allow for a more level playing field within the world of web search provider platforms, as well as fostering innovation through the development and growth of other search engine providers who would now have access to valuable data previously inaccessible to them by Google and others operating on traditional web platforms.

Google

For many years, Google has enjoyed substantial market share and therefore very little competition in the web search space, which has significantly hindered the development and growth of many competing products. The purpose of the proposed regulation by the EU is to promote and enhance the development of alternative search engines to Google, as a means of introducing competition into the web search marketplace.

Some proponents of this proposed regulation believe that allowing the forced sharing of data between large technology firms and small companies could potentially spur much more innovation for the benefit of users. Others are concerned that by mandating that companies share data, there are significant risks to data privacy, security, and the proprietary nature of data.

If enforced, these new regulations would likely have a major impact on the manner in which search engines operate across Europe and significantly impact all tech companies operating in Europe.
