Epic Games removes three Fortnite modes amid 1,000 layoffs
"Epic Games has removed 3 Fortnite game modes while also laying off around 1,000 employees earlier today."
The removed modes include Rocket Racing, Ballistic, and Fortnite Festival Battle Stage. According to Epic Games, the decision comes after the company “failed to create something truly engaging that would attract a larger player base.”
A decline in player engagement reportedly began in 2025, with the company spending more than it was earning, which ultimately led to both the layoffs and the removal of these modes.
Despite their removal, the modes will remain playable for a limited time before being permanently shut down. Epic Games has already confirmed the shutdown dates: Rocket Racing will go offline next week, while Ballistic and Battle Stage are set to close on April 16, 2026.
Rocket Racing was an arcade-style racing mode featuring high-speed tracks, boosts, jumps, and power-ups. Ballistic, on the other hand, was a tactical shooter mode similar to games like Counter-Strike, though it was often seen as unpolished by the community. Fortnite Festival Battle Stage focused on PvP rhythm-based gameplay, allowing players to compete through music-driven challenges.
Fan reactions have been mixed. While many understand the reasoning behind the decision, others are disappointed to see the modes removed. Some players have also criticized Epic Games, arguing that the company tried to create something for everyone but ultimately failed to deliver a compelling experience for anyone.
