Epic attracts millions, but Steam still dominates PC game sales
"The Epic Games Store has added millions of users through free games, but third-party sales remain limited, leaving Steam firmly in control of PC game revenue."
The Epic Games Store has seen explosive user growth in recent years, expanding from roughly 108 million registered users to nearly 295 million. Much of this surge has been driven by aggressive promotions, including weekly free game giveaways and high-profile exclusives aimed at drawing players into Epic’s ecosystem.
Yet, despite the growing user base, Epic has struggled to convert registrations into significant third-party game sales. Public financial disclosures and industry reports indicate that spending on non-Epic-published titles has increased only modestly, remaining a small fraction of what Steam generates annually through PC game sales.
Struggling to Convert Users into Buyers
Analysts note that Epic’s approach has been effective at attracting users but far less successful at changing long-established buying habits. Many players primarily use Epic to claim free games, while continuing to make most of their purchases on Steam. Valve’s platform benefits from features like detailed reviews, mod support, community hubs, and expansive libraries—elements deeply ingrained in PC gaming culture.
Steam’s dominance is built on more than just scale. The platform offers developers robust tools, backend support, and marketplace visibility that drive strong sales, especially during seasonal events. For many studios, launching on Steam remains the clearest path to sustained revenue.
Epic’s Long-Term Bet
Epic, meanwhile, continues to invest in gradual improvements to its storefront, positioning itself for long-term growth rather than immediate revenue wins. The company maintains that lowering barriers for players and developers alike will eventually pay off, even if third-party sales growth remains slow in the short term.
The contrast between Epic’s rapid user growth and its modest revenue gains has sparked industry discussions about platform sustainability and monetization. Free content can quickly attract users, but converting that audience into consistent paying customers has proven far more challenging.
For now, the gap between the two storefronts is clear. Steam continues to dominate PC game sales, while Epic faces the ongoing challenge of turning scale into spending in an increasingly competitive digital marketplace.
