"Eidos-Montréal studio, the studio behind famous titles like Deus Ex and Guardians of the Galaxy, has laid off 124 employees, and their head, David Anfossi, has also left the studio."

Eidos-Montréal studio, the studio behind famous titles like Deus Ex and Guardians of the Galaxy, has laid off 124 employees, and their head, David Anfossi, has also left the studio.

Although it hasn’t been officially stated whether he resigned or was also laid off along with the 124 employees, what we do know for sure is that they have parted ways.

According to them, the reason is due to project changes, and they need to focus on where they are “most efficient,” as they said themselves.

However, this isn’t random. The studio has been struggling with layoffs for years. In 2024, they laid off 97 people. In 2025, they laid off 75 people, and now in 2026, another 124 employees have been let go. That’s nearly 300 people over three years.

Their projects have also been falling apart. A new Deus Ex was canceled, along with several other projects. The studio hasn’t had a major hit in a long time, so there simply isn’t enough work. As a result, layoffs were inevitable.

Even worse, they are now a support studio.
Instead of making their own games, they are working on other projects like Fable and Grounded 2. That’s a major downgrade, going from a “lead studio” to a “support studio.”

AN EVEN BIGGER PROBLEM: the Embracer situation
Their owner, Embracer Group, went through a financial collapse in 2023. Since then, there have been layoffs, studio closures, and canceled projects. Eidos is just another victim of that situation. The departure of the studio head is also a huge deal; it usually means the studio is changing direction or declining. Anfossi had been there for a long time and worked on games like Deus Ex, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, and Avengers. His departure basically marks the end of an era.

This is becoming a very sad trend in the AAA industry. Companies overspend, projects fail, and then people who did nothing wrong end up losing their jobs.
